Finding the right nanny is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a parent. The caregiver you choose will spend countless hours with your children, helping shape their daily routines, supporting their development, and becoming a trusted part of your family's life.
Today, families have more hiring options than ever before. Some parents search for caregivers through online nanny platforms or job boards, while others partner with professional nanny agencies that manage the recruitment and placement process.
Both approaches can help families connect with potential caregivers, but they differ significantly in terms of screening, support, time commitment, and the overall hiring experience.
Understanding these differences can help you determine which option best fits your family's needs, budget, and expectations.
At Elite Nanny League, we believe informed parents make confident hiring decisions. This guide compares nanny agencies and online nanny platforms so you can choose the approach that's right for your family.
A professional nanny agency recruits, evaluates, and carefully matches qualified caregivers with families.
Rather than simply listing candidates, agencies typically:
The goal is to create long-term placements that benefit both families and caregivers.
Online nanny platforms function similarly to employment marketplaces.
Families typically create a profile, post a job, browse caregiver profiles, and contact candidates directly.
Depending on the platform, parents may be responsible for:
Some platforms offer optional screening services, but families generally manage much of the hiring process themselves.
One of the biggest differences between a nanny agency and an online platform is how candidates are selected.
With a professional agency, families receive a shortlist of candidates who have already been evaluated and matched based on their needs.
With an online platform, parents often review dozens—or even hundreds—of profiles before deciding whom to interview.
Families who enjoy conducting their own search may appreciate this flexibility, while those with limited time often prefer the guidance and efficiency of a professional agency.
Candidate screening is one of the most important aspects of hiring a nanny.
Professional nanny agencies typically perform comprehensive evaluations that may include:
Online platforms may allow candidates to create profiles with varying levels of verification. Depending on the service, families may need to independently confirm references, employment history, and other qualifications.
Understanding exactly what has—and has not—been verified is an important step before making a hiring decision.
Professional nanny agencies focus on compatibility as well as qualifications.
They often consider:
This personalized approach helps increase the likelihood of a successful long-term placement.
Online platforms generally allow families to search using filters such as location, availability, experience, or certifications, but the responsibility for evaluating overall compatibility usually remains with the family.

Hiring independently requires a significant investment of time.
Parents may need to:
A professional nanny agency handles much of this work before presenting qualified candidates, allowing families to focus on final interviews and selecting the best match.
The hiring process doesn't always end once a nanny begins working.
Professional agencies often provide continued support through:
Online platforms generally serve as hiring marketplaces, with families managing the employment relationship after the hire.
Some families require caregivers with specialized experience.
Professional agencies often recruit candidates for positions such as:
While specialized caregivers may also advertise on online platforms, agencies often provide additional guidance in defining the role and evaluating relevant experience.

For many families, privacy is an important consideration.
Professional nanny agencies often work with executives, physicians, entrepreneurs, athletes, entertainers, and other families who value discretion.
Experienced agencies understand the importance of:

Families sometimes assume hiring through an online platform is always less expensive than using a nanny agency.
While platform membership fees may be lower than agency placement fees, it's also important to consider:
A professional agency typically includes recruiting expertise, personalized matching, and placement support within its fee structure.
Rather than focusing solely on upfront costs, families may find it helpful to evaluate the overall value, time savings, and support each option provides.
Hiring a nanny means becoming a household employer.
Professional agencies frequently educate families about topics such as:
Families hiring independently should also familiarize themselves with applicable employment and tax requirements.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) generally considers nannies to be household employees—not independent contractors—when the family controls how and when the work is performed.

One of the primary goals of a professional nanny agency is creating lasting placements.
Successful long-term relationships often depend on:
While excellent long-term relationships can certainly develop through independent hiring, agencies often structure their placement process specifically to support long-term success.
A professional nanny agency may be the best choice if you:
An online nanny platform may be appropriate if you:
