Family vacations are meant to be relaxing, memorable, and enjoyable. However, traveling with children often comes with unique challenges that can make even the most carefully planned trip feel overwhelming. Between navigating airports, maintaining routines, managing meals, handling naps, and keeping children entertained, parents frequently find themselves needing a vacation after the vacation.
This is one reason why more families are choosing to hire travel nannies.
A travel nanny provides professional childcare support while families are away from home, allowing parents to enjoy their trip while ensuring their children receive attentive, consistent care. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway, an international vacation, a business trip, or an extended summer abroad, the right travel nanny can make the experience significantly smoother for everyone involved.
However, not every nanny is suited for travel. Travel assignments require flexibility, adaptability, professionalism, and the ability to thrive in unfamiliar environments.
At Elite Nanny League, we help families identify caregivers who are qualified for travel positions and capable of supporting a family's unique lifestyle. Before making a hiring decision, it is important to ask the right questions to determine whether a candidate is truly prepared for the demands of travel childcare.
Here are the most important questions to ask before hiring a travel nanny.
One of the first questions families should ask is whether the nanny has prior experience traveling with families.
Travel childcare differs significantly from traditional nanny positions. A nanny who excels in a home environment may not necessarily feel comfortable navigating airports, international destinations, changing schedules, unfamiliar accommodations, and extended workdays.
Ask candidates:
Experienced travel nannies can often provide specific examples that demonstrate their ability to adapt to different situations while maintaining high-quality childcare.
The more detailed their answers, the easier it becomes to evaluate their readiness for your family's travel needs.
One reality of travel is that things rarely go exactly as planned.
Flights get delayed. Weather changes itineraries. Children become tired, overwhelmed, or sick. Schedules shift unexpectedly.
A successful travel nanny must remain calm under pressure.
Ask candidates how they have handled:
Their responses often reveal valuable information about their flexibility, problem-solving skills, and ability to remain composed during stressful situations.
These qualities are essential when traveling with children.
If your family frequently travels abroad, this question is especially important.
International travel introduces additional considerations such as:
Ask candidates whether they currently have a valid passport and whether they have previous international travel experience.
You should also discuss any destinations that may require extensive travel, remote accommodations, or significant schedule adjustments.
A nanny who enjoys travel and embraces new experiences often adapts more successfully to international assignments.
One of the most important aspects of hiring a travel nanny is establishing expectations regarding their role during the trip.
Some parents expect extensive childcare coverage, while others simply want occasional support.
Ask questions such as:
Understanding their perspective helps ensure alignment before the trip begins.
Clear expectations reduce misunderstandings and contribute to a more positive experience for everyone involved.

Travel often disrupts children's normal schedules.
Sleep routines, meal times, educational activities, and daily habits may all be affected.
Experienced travel nannies understand the importance of maintaining consistency whenever possible.
Ask candidates:
Their answers can provide insight into how they prioritize children's emotional well-being and adjustment.
A skilled travel nanny understands that maintaining familiar routines often leads to happier children and smoother vacations.
Different age groups present different travel challenges.
Infants require feeding schedules, naps, and extensive preparation.
Toddlers need supervision, flexibility, and constant engagement.
School-age children often require activity planning and entertainment.
Teenagers may need support navigating independence and changing schedules.
Ask candidates which age groups they have traveled with previously and which they feel most comfortable supporting.
Specific experience can be especially valuable when traveling with multiple children across different age ranges.
Safety should always remain a top priority.
Travel nannies must be capable of responding quickly and confidently in emergency situations.
Questions may include:

Preparedness is one of the strongest indicators of professionalism and reliability.
Travel nannies often assist with more than childcare.
Depending on the family's needs, they may help with:

Open conversations help prevent confusion and establish mutual respect.
Communication becomes even more important when families are away from home.
Ask candidates:
